About Roadless Forest Guide

A small independent editorial team writing about Europe's last wild forests and the places that are still hard to reach. Here is how the site is made, how it earns money, and what to do when we are wrong.

What we publish

Practical guides to old-growth and primeval forests from Białowieża to the Nordic taiga, to national parks and wilderness areas, to remote corners of Europe and dark sky parks. We explain how accessibility maps measure remoteness and why roads matter for forests. And we cover the practical side of a trip: trekking sites, wild camping rules, cabins, long-distance trails, getting there without a car, navigation, safety, gear and leaving no trace. Everything appears in English and German.

About this domain

The address roadlessforest.eu was used by a research pilot project between about 2016 and 2018 and changed hands several times afterwards. Roadless Forest Guide is a new, independent publication with no connection to that project, its operators, funders or partners.

How we work

  • Sources first. National park authorities, protected-area managers, official tourism and transport sources, the relevant laws and published research. Where we describe experience or common practice rather than rules, we say so.
  • Dated facts. Access rules, camping regulations, opening times and prices change. Time-sensitive statements carry the month they were checked.
  • No invented numbers. We do not publish figures, rankings or records we cannot trace back to a source.
  • Guidance, not advice. Pages on wild camping rules are an overview, not legal advice. Pages on safety and forest bathing are general information, not medical advice. In an emergency, call 112.
  • Corrections. Substantiated errors get fixed. Significant changes are noted on the page.

How the site is funded

Roadless Forest Guide is a commercial publication. It is funded by advertising and by partner links to some of the accommodation, tour and outdoor providers we mention. If you book or buy something after following a partner link, we may receive a commission; the price is the same for you either way. Partner links are marked.

No provider pays for a mention, a position or a verdict, and no provider sees an article before it is published. Where the free option is the better one, such as a public trail, a basic shelter or a paper map, we say so.

Who writes this

The site is written and edited by a small team rather than by named individual authors, and we do not attach personal bylines or invented credentials to the pages. Editorial responsibility sits with the operator named in the imprint.
